Howard Dental Center

Medicine Horse Program

Project Angel Heart

Howard Dental Center is a non-profit organization that provides compassionate, high quality, comprehensive oral health care to men, women and children living with HIV/AIDS.  Oral health is critical to the overall health of people who have compromised immune systems.  HIV/AIDS has changed considerably over the past several years.  The introduction of new medicines has altered the nature of HIV, making it a chronic disease for many.  But, HIV remains a difficult and deadly illness.  And the oral manifestations are complex and challenging to manage.

Howard Dental Center has been successfully treating our patients for over ten years.  As the disease has evolved, so have we.  Today, we are learning amazing things about the links between achieving optimum oral health and the immune system.  Howard Dental Center is a specialty oral health clinic that represents a link between dentistry and medicine.  The Center performs three functions:  1) clinical services to patients, 2) research and 3) education to the private oral health practitioner.  We have a dental staff of one full-time dentist, one full-time hygienist, and a full-time chair side assistant.

Last year, we performed close to 5,000 dental procedures and improved the lives of 600 patients.  Over 90% of our patients live below the poverty line.  Most of our patients are not able to afford the dental care we provide them to live a healthy life, as they are unable to work or hold a steady job because of their illness.  We rely on donors such as the CGRA to help us to continue to provide the excellent oral health care our patients need.  Thank you!

In 2006, we treated over 600 patients, performing over 5,000 procedures.  Over 90% of our patients are unable to pay for their care, so we rely heavily on our donors, grants and fundraisers.  Your donated dollars make a huge impact for us!  For every dollar that is contributed, we are able to provide a $1.13 in patient services.   Thank you to the CGRA for your support this year!

Enhancing Life Through Unique Equine-Assisted Experiences

For more than 7 years, Medicine Horse Program has been dedicated to enhancing the quality of life of adolescents, families, and adults through unique equine-assisted experiences. We provide group and individual therapy sessions that focus on healing. Individual and group psychotherapy sessions are offered. We are a 501(c)3 non-profit organization.

Our services meet the particular needs of low-income individuals referred to us by local city and county agencies. Vulnerable youth populations are an emphasis at Medicine Horse Program.

Medicine Horse Program thrives with the help of a dedicated staff, board of directors and numerous enthusiastic volunteers. Find out more about the people who help make this program a success by visiting our Staff and Board of Directors and Advisory Board pages.

Why Horses?

The horse is an intuitive, honest and responsive being. Through interaction with the horse, humans can gain awareness about how we relate to ourselves and others in our lives.

  • Horses live in herds closely resembling human groups such as the family system.
  • Relationship with other herd members determines the individuals' survival as well as their role within the herd.
  • Horses, as prey animals, live in the here and now in order to survive. They can teach the importance of awareness.
  • Horses have unique personalities eliciting different behaviors and emotions in different people.

New insights, skills and successes developed in the arena transfer to each participant's everyday life. Medicine Horse Program provides a fun, challenging and unique environment in which human growth and potential may be achieved.

Dedicated members of the Denver community founded Project Angel Heart in 1991. They were determined to ensure that those living with HIV/AIDS and other life-threatening illnesses were receiving proper nutrition -- vital in the fight against disease. Project Angel Heart initially served 12 clients from a single, donated pan of lasagna. In 2008, Project Angel Heart delivered over 407,279 meals to 1,687 clients, free of charge. During eighteen years of phenomenal growth, our goal has always remained the same: ‘meals with love’ for men, women, and children living with life-threatening illness.

Support from the community has been unwavering since those first meals were delivered in 1991. Our delivery zone has expanded from 150 square miles of central Denver to encompass delivery boundaries that include 750 square miles of metropolitan Denver and 150 square miles in the Colorado Springs area. Such growth would not have been possible without our corps of dedicated volunteers. In 2008, 2,983 people donated 42,285 hours of their time preparing food in the kitchen, driving 42,952 miles to deliver meals to clients’ homes, helping in the office, and assisting with fundraising events.

For over 800 clients served each week, Project Angel Heart embodies stability and hope by providing nutritious meals, free of charge, and specifically prepared to meet the nutritional needs of each individual client. Life-threatening illnesses can drain a person’s energy and finances, threaten their dignity, limit their independence, and leave them feeling alone and vulnerable. Project Angel Heart provides life-saving nutrition necessary for physical, emotional, and financial health.
